Istanbul Modern Gets A New Look With Renzo Piano’s Fish Scale-Inspired Facade

The iconic Istanbul Modern museum, which spans an area of more than 10,000 square meters on Karaköy waterfront, a historic neighborhood of Istanbul where the Bosphorus and Golden Horn canals converge, is the first project of Renzo Piano Building Workshop in Turkey.

The building, which was created to appear like a ship, is made up of three stacked rectilinear volumes with an upper-heavy framework. Aluminum panels covering the building reflect the varying sky and light, giving it a soft iridescence that resembles fish scales and the Bosphorus canal. The building’s architecture is influenced by the area’s past as a harbor and depicts the Bosphorus’ ships and marine life.

The museum’s ground level has a library, cafe, gift shop, education, exhibition, and event facilities along with large glass windows that offer views of the waterfront promenade. The museum’s goal of giving visitors a diverse experience through audience-oriented exhibitions and programming inspired by contemporary artistic diversity is consistent with the building’s clear and open design. Istanbul Modern’s first level is home to photography galleries, transient pop-up exhibitions, staff offices, a restaurant, terraces, and extra event and classroom spaces. The second floor of the museum is where the permanent collections are located. A sizable terrace on the museum’s roof looks out over a reflecting pool that extends the Bosphorus.

In other areas of Istanbul, Turkish architecture firm Salon Alper Derinbogaz designed a set of “pandemic-resistant” offices for Yldz Technical University, while Foster + Partners built an Apple Store with two travertine stone walls in the city center.
