Update On Our Collaboration With Udemy + Skillshare

As a successful Udemy/Skillshare creator for the past 6 years, I have mixed feelings about my new announcement for the future of my training and tutorials on the Udemy platform, with also excitement on the new journey for I Am The Studio and our students going forward If you didn’t know already, I’m Brandon Aaron Gibbs, registered Architect and the founder of the courses platform I Am The Studio, in addition to being the Creative Director at MotionFORM, a design innovation lab and Senior editor at technology courses platform ThinkParametric. I have been in the Architecture education industry simultaneously while working with clients and firms on leading Architectural projects over the past 2 decades. I mentored in The American Institute of Graphic Arts Elevate program, where I was a Director for 2019, and I also mentored in both the American Institute of Architecture and National Organization of Minority Architects organizations. I started creating commissioned Architecture courses online in 2017, after seeing interest in key skills in areas where I specialized, and I have continued ever since helping thousands grow new skills and find opportunities with top design skills. I began my story with Udemy/Skillshare helping colleagues create courses, where I subsequently launched The Complete SketchUp Guide in 2020, my most successful course, now with more than 4,000 students on Udemy + Skillshare. Since that time, I have created several hit Architecture courses, where I have had both rewarding and humbling feedback, gaining 100 -200 students monthly across my top skilled courses. However, in looking at the investments for the future of I Am The Studio, and the value we can provide and capture, the path on Udemy and effort to sustain was not matching. Udemy has done an incredible thing in the design space, but it is unfortunately proving a narrowing opportunity even from my first days, creating a negative reward cycle pushing down value received per value created.

In response to the above negative Udemy climate for creators and our maturation as a focused courses platform, I will be removing 90% -95% of my courses from Udemy (permanently hidden from public) as of December 1st. I will also be offering free single course enrollment to existing students on my platform. These moves will allow me better quality time for focus on the work of better connecting with students and creating better courses at the I Am The Studio home.

If you are one of my existing students, on Udemy, I want to thank you for your continued support and attention concerning this. I still believe that quality is built over time, and that you should continue to train your skills for new opportunities, that I Am The Studio is releasing.
